You can bring a Trello board to thisflow with the JSON export Trello has on every board. thisflow shows a preview first, nothing changes until you confirm, and the board in Trello stays as it is.
Export the board from Trello
In Trello, open the board, open the board menu (⋯ at the top right) and choose Print, export and share → Export as JSON. Save what you get as a file ending in .json. If the JSON opens in a browser tab instead of downloading, save the page with ⌘S (Ctrl+S on Windows and Linux).
Do this for every board you want to bring along: thisflow imports one board at a time.
Tip: before you export, archive the cards you are done with. thisflow leaves archived cards out, so the board arrives without the old work.
Open Import in thisflow
Go to Settings → Data → Import, or press ⌘K (Ctrl+K on Windows and Linux) and choose Import from Todoist or CSV. The page is called Import tasks.
Press Choose a file, or drop the .json file on the page. thisflow recognises the board by what is inside the file, and the preview shows Trello board under the file name.
Check the preview
Before anything is added, the preview shows what the file holds:
- New projects: the board.
- New sections: one for each open list.
- Tasks, with how many of them are subtasks (open checklist items).
- Comments on the cards. Recurring stays at 0, because thisflow does not read repeats from a Trello board.
- A line with how many cards were marked complete and are left out.
If some cards could not be read, a note such as 2 rows need a look lists them, for example a card without a name, which is skipped.
If the numbers are not what you expected, press Choose another file. Otherwise press the import button, which shows the number of tasks, for example Import 42 tasks.
Know what comes along
Here is how a Trello board maps to thisflow:
- Board: becomes a project with the board's name. If you already have a project with that name, the cards go into it instead.
- Lists: become sections, in the same order. An empty list becomes an empty section.
- Cards: become tasks in the order they had on the board, and the description becomes the note.
- Checklists: each open checklist item becomes a subtask of its card. Ticked items are left out, and the checklist names are not kept.
- Labels: become tags, in lower case. A label without a name becomes a tag named after its colour, such as
green. - Members: a card is assigned to its members who have the same name in thisflow. A card with no match is assigned to you.
- Due dates: kept as the due date, without the time of day.
- Comments: become comments on the task, oldest first. They show under your name, dated the day of the import.
Some things stay behind:
- Archived cards, cards in archived lists, and cards whose due date is marked complete.
- Attachments, covers, start dates, custom fields and Power-Up data.
- Priorities: tasks come in without one.
Import the board
Press Import 42 tasks (with your number). thisflow adds everything in one go, opens the project, and a message confirms how many tasks were imported. If something looks wrong, press Undo in that message to take the whole import back.
Repeat the steps for your next board.
Check the result
Open the project and look it over:
- Switch to Board: your lists are the columns, in the same order. The same tasks show in List and, with their dates, in Calendar; see Kanban boards.
- Open a few cards in the side panel and check notes, subtasks, tags and comments.
- Every new project also gets a Done section at the end. When you complete a task, it moves there.
- If the board had a list for finished cards that you did not archive, it arrives as an ordinary section with open tasks. Complete them, and they move to the Done section.
- New projects are created in your personal workspace. To work on one together, share it: see Share a project and pick roles.
Why are some of my cards missing?
Archived cards, cards in archived lists and cards whose due date was marked complete are left out. Everything else on the board comes along.
Where did my checklists go?
Each open item is now a subtask of its card, in the same order. Ticked items are left out. A card with several checklists gets all their open items as subtasks, without the checklist names.
Some older comments are missing. Why?
thisflow imports the comments that are in the file. On a large, old board Trello's export may not hold the whole history, so the earliest comments can be missing.
What happens if I import the same board twice?
You get the cards twice. The project and its sections are reused by name, but every card is added again. Press Undo right after an import you did not mean to make. For a side-by-side look at the two tools, see thisflow vs Trello.
